The following should be provided for each learning task:
  • A brief statement of the purpose of the task and how it relates to the key learning outcomes;
The purpose of this activity is to allow students the opportunity to work in groups to integrate learning in a practical way and to report findings accordingly.

Using theories and concepts studied in this course critically analyze and evaluate the compensation, benefits, and HRIS of two real organizations with which you are familiar using the set topic below. Students may elect to present one or two of these topics (eg, compensation only, or benefits and HRIS or other combinations of the three topics) if they are interested and if the material warrants a more exclusive focus.

Topic: Identify two companies—one that you believe pursues a lowest-cost strategy and another that pursues a differentiation strategy or similar. Relying on personal knowledge, company annual reports, articles in newspapers and business periodicals, or the internet, etc, discuss these companies’ competitive and total rewards strategies.
The presentation should contain a description of the organizations’ compensation, benefits, and HRIS systems and structures. The compensation, benefits and HRIS initiatives undertaken in the very recent past should be described where possible.  An analysis and evaluation of the effectiveness of current compensation, benefits and HRIS in meeting the requirements of the organizations should be undertaken.
The literature should be used to support your analysis including discussion of current organizational issues and influences (eg. collective bargaining processes; unionization; globalization; Workplace Relations Act; individual contracts) emerging from the organization’s compensation, benefits and HRIS should be noted.  Include recommendations and suggestions for improvement of the organization’s compensation, benefits, and HRIS.
Presentations:     In tutorials during weeks 10, 11 & 12 (depending on tutorial size)
Time allocation:  30 minutes (maximum)
Report length:     2500-3500 words
Format:                Essay or Management Report
  • A clear statement of the criteria that will be used to grade the task;

  • A clear description of who will be the assessor (ie peer review, self-reflection, tutor, lecturer, etc);

  • A clear statement of the weighting of each criterion used in the judgment process of the task;
40% (Report = 30% & Presentation = 10%
  • An indication of the approximate amount of time students should devote to the task;
A suggested minimum of 25 to 30 hours of study time per student outside class time.
  • Submission details relevant to the task (due date, method of submission, etc)
  • As statement regarding how students will receive feedback and the process of returning the student work (where applicable);
Feedback and grades will be communicated via Moodle within three weeks of report submission.
