COM4056 | Individual Problems and Case study on Secure Server Network | Systems Administration

Question 1: Which cryptography for a company in the expansion? (20 points)
A successful financial company based in the North East is about to open a second office in the south of the country. The CEO decides to introduce “security” to the digital communications amongst staff but is unsure whether to use symmetric or public-key cryptography.
You are hired by the CEO to write a short report (1000 words max) advising the company.

Question 2: Keccak (15 points)
Write a short report on the SHA-3 (a.k.a Keccak), its strengths and weaknesses. (750 words max).

Question 3: Prof. McMenteur’s claim (15 points)
Geology professor Peter McMenteur gets interested in Lamport’s authentication scheme. After a brief study of this, he claims that the scheme works even if the hash function is substituted by a function that is only easy to compute and hard to invert (i.e., a hash function without the property of collision resistance).

Question 4: Design and Implementation of a Secure Server Network (50 points)
This task involves designing and implementing an Internet-connected secure server network for a medium-sized company named BETA Enterprise, UK. They want to implement a secure network that uses Class C network address with two subnets in total – server subnet and one LAN subnet and has approached you. They have asked you for a price quote as well. But they want to see a virtual machine implementation and simulation results before they commit to purchase anything.
You can use Virtual Machines as in the figure below for the implementation and the security attacks. The server network should consist of one server, i.e. Windows 2008/2012 or Linux (Ubuntu or others). It
- 1 -Teesside University  School of Computing, Media and the Arts should be connected to one workstation (at the least), i.e. Windows Server to Windows client or Linux Server to Linux client. The workstation denotes a different LAN.

Write a report with the appropriate details (2500 words max, but flexible) documenting all that you have done including how the servers are set up, how they are tested and how the attacks are done to them along with countermeasures. Use the tasks below as a guideline to write.
                              10101010101010101010101010
Please do the following tasks:
  1. Using the Virtual Machines, configure the ANYONE physical server namely Windows 2008/2012 or Ubuntu (or other Linux servers), with the following: (1) DNS server (2) DHCP server (3) Web server (4) Email server (5) FTP server. Use a client computer to test the five servers to see if it works properly. Capture the appropriate screenshots or illustrate that through commands and output screens. Draw a simple network or workflow diagram of your network (25 marks)
HINTS:
  • DNS Server: Show that the (or similar) domain name is configured and that the clients could join it. Create some users and login into the domain. Test what was implemented.
  • DHCP Server: Show the dynamic IP address assignment with an address pool along with the evidence of clients receiving dynamic IP.
  • Web server: Configure IIS and Apache with web address betaenterprise.com (or similar) can be accessed from the web client. Test the web server with a sample webpage being accessed from the client.
  • Email Server: Make sure you have an email client that could send and receive emails through the SMTP server that is configured with an email address like (or similar).
  • FTP Server: You can show how files could be uploaded and downloaded to and from the FTP server using the FTP client tools or through command prompt.
  1. Implement at least five security attacks on these servers through Kali Linux or other independent tools and suggest countermeasures to stop them. Illustrate the attacks through commands or using GUI tools. Capture the attacks through screenshots or graphs or tables. (10 marks)
  1. Show the detailed cost of implementing your solution, in a table format. You can try to show two different costs for the company to choose from. HINTS: Research on the costs of servers (hardware and software), switches, workstations, cables, etc. (10 marks)
  1. Show all references used in the report, using appropriate referencing. HINTS: Harvard referencing can be used and make sure the format is fully followed. (5 marks)

Task 1- Background information

Write a description of the selected dataset and its importance is given the Solar Cities project, i.e. the Solar Cities project is attempting to understand power usage in dwellings, in order to then recommend how to improve the overall efficiency of power consumption in dwellings. Information must be appropriately referenced. [1 Page]

Task 2 – Reporting / Dashboards
For your project, perform the relevant data analysis tasks by
  • answering the above questions
  • finding new relevant questions
  • answering the two main questions
You should also identify the visualization and dashboards you need to develop to best communicate your findings to the stakeholders. [2-3 Pages

Task 3 – Research
Justify why these BI reporting solution/dashboards are chosen in Task 2 (Reporting / Dashboards) and why those data set features are present and laid out in the fashion you proposed (feel free to include all other relevant justifications).
Note: To ensure that you discuss this task properly, you must include visual samples of the reports you produce (i.e. the screenshots of the BI report/dashboard must be presented and explained in the written report; use ‘Snipping tool’), and also include any assumptions that you may have made about the analysis in your Task2. [1-2 Pages]

Task4 – Recommendations for the project manager and project stakeholders
Based on your BI analysis and the insights gained from the “Data Set”, given your analysis performed in previous tasks, make some logical recommendations to the stakeholders. Justify the answers to the two main questions, and show where power consumption efficiencies could be made, and what future consumption will look like. Give 2 possible scenarios. Also, if you have a predictive model show which features and measurements lead to power reductions/increases, to add to your logical recommendations. Do this with the help of appropriate references from peer-reviewed sources. [1-2 Pages]

Task 5 - The Reflection: Each Team member is expected to write a brief reflection about this project in terms of challenges, learning, and contribution.
Report Submission:

  • Submit a 7-8 page report (about 1500 words) not counting cover page and references) of this project. At least 5 references in your report must be from peer-reviewed sources. Include any and all sources of information including any person(s) you interviewed for this project.
  • Please note that all references must adhere to APA style. See
  • You are reminded to read the “Plagiarism” section of the
  • course description. Your essay should be a synthesis of ideas from a variety of sources expressed in your own words.
  • All reports must use the APA referencing style. University Referencing/Citation Style Guide: The University has published a style guide to help students correctly reference and cite information they use in assignments (American Psychological Association (APA) citation style,
  • Reports are to be presented in hard copy in size 12 Arial Font and double spaced. Your report should include a list of references used in the essay and a bibliography of the wider reading you have done to familiarize yourself on the topic.
  • A passing grade will be awarded to assignments adequately addressing all assessment criteria. Higher grades require better quality and more effort. For example, a minimum is set on the wider reading required. A student reading vastly more than this minimum will be better prepared to discuss the issues in depth and consequently, their report is likely to be of a higher quality. So before submitting, please read through the assessment criteria very carefully.

Task

This assessment aims to develop and gauge student understanding of the key topics covered so far by answering the following questions. Answering these questions will help you build some understanding for the next assessment item as well as for the entire subject. It is expected that answers to the assignment questions be succinct (i.e. precise and concise) with all sources of information fully referenced as per APA referencing style. You have to reference the textbook and any additional material you have used in your answers.

Note that the guide for APA referencing is provided in the resources section of Interact site of this subject.
Answers MUST be written in your own words. If an answer contains more than 10% direct quote (referenced or unreferenced), 0 marks will be awarded for this question. One or two sentence answers will be too short and only receive low marks. Answers longer than 1.5 pages (12 point font, single line spacing) may incur a penalty if too much non-relevant information is stated. For mathematical questions, it is expected that you show intermediate steps of your working. Just stating the correct solution will result in low marks, on the other hand, if the working is correct and you only made minor mistakes, you will still be awarded marks, even though the final answer is wrong.

Question 1   [5 Marks]
Automated Teller Machines (ATM) are designed so that users will provide a personal identification number (PIN) and a card to access their bank accounts. Give examples of confidentiality, integrity and availability requirements associated in such a system and describe the degree of importance for each requirement.

Question 2   [5 Marks]
A thief broke into an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) using a screwdriver and was able to jam the card reader as well as breaking five keys from the keypad. The thief had to halt the process of the break-in and hide, as a customer approached to use the ATM. The customer was able to successfully enter their ATM card, punch in the 4 digit PIN and was able to draw out some cash. Since the card reader was jammed, the customer was however not able to withdraw the ATM card and drove off to seek some help. In the meantime, the thief came back and decided to try to discover the customer’s PIN so that he can steal money from the customer. You are required to calculate the maximum number of PINs that the thief may have to enter before correctly discovering the customer’s PIN?

Question 3   [5 Marks]
Thinking about bio-metric authentication, list three reasons why people may be reluctant to use biometrics. Describe various ways of how to counter those objections.

Question 4   [5 Marks]
In biometric authentication, false positive and false negative rates can be tuned according to the requirement, and they are often complementary i.e. raising one lowers the other. Describe two circumstances where false negatives are significantly more serious than false positives.

Question 5    [10 Marks]
Transposition is one known method of encrypting the text. What can be one way that a piece of ciphertext can be determined quickly if it was likely a result of a transposition? Utilizing some of the decryption techniques (substitution and others) covered in the subject so far, you are required to decipher (find the plain text) the ciphertext that will be provided to you closer to the assessment due date via the subject site. In order to present your solution, you need to demonstrate and explain the steps taken to decipher this text.

Rationale
The assessment task is aligned with the following learning outcomes of the subject:
• be able to justify security goals and the importance of maintaining the secure computing environment against digital threats;
• be able to explain the fundamental concepts of cryptographic algorithms;
• be able to examine malicious activities that may affect the security of a computer program and justify the choice of various controls to mitigate threats.
• be able to compare and contrast the security mechanisms of a trusted operating system with those used in a general-purpose operating system;

Python Program | Python

Python Program | Python

The Misbehavior of Markets
  1. Write a python program(s) to download end-of-day data last 25 years the major global stock market indices from Yahoo! Finance–
  • Dow Jones Index (USA)
  • S&P 500 (USA)
  • NASDAQ (USA)
  • DAX (Germany)
  • FTSE (UK)
  • HANGSENG (Hong Kong)
  • KOSPI (Korea)
  • CNX NIFTY (India)
    1. It is a common assumption in quantitative finance that stock returns follow a normal distribution whereas prices follow a lognormal distribution. For all these indices check how closely price movements followed a log-normal
    2. Verify whether returns from these broad market indices followed a  normal distribution?
    3. For each of the above two parameters (price movements and stock returns) come up with specific statistical measures that clearly identify the degree of deviation from the ideal distributions. Graphically represent the degree  of
    4. One of the most notable hypothesis about stock market behavior is the “Efficient market hypothesis” which also internally assume that market price follows a random-walk process. Assuming that Stock Index prices follow a geometric Brownian motion and hence index returns were log-normally distributed with about 20% historical volatility, write a program sub-module to calculate the probability of an event like the 1987 stock market crash happening ? Explain in   simple terms what the results
  1. What does "fat tail" mean? Plot the distribution of price movements for the downloaded indices (in separate subplot panes of a graph) and identify fat tail locations if
  2. It is often claimed that fractals and multi-fractals generate a more realistic picture of market risks than log-normal distribution. Considering last 10 year daily price movements of NASDAQ, write a program to check whether fractal geometrics could have better predicted stock market movements than log-normal distribution assumption. Explain your  findings with suitable graphs.
Students would note that this project has deliberately been left open-ended. Instead of asking you to deliver a specific program, we wanted you to analyze real market behavior and corresponding academic theories and come up with your own conclusions. However, as would be ‘Quants’ any decision you should ensure that any conclusion should be grounded in solid mathematics and quantitative analytics!

Note: The submitted code should constitute a fully workable version. All relevant   module import statement should be part of the code. Students are encouraged to avoid usage of any special python packages for the assignment and stick to using standard python libraries mentioned as part of the course. In case such a non- standard package is anyway used, students should provide clear directions as to how to access and install the same. Pip installations  are preferred.

Other Deliverables
Solution Design: Write a 3-page document (1500 words or fewer) that lists the steps you would need to take to build your project. Please ensure that the document is understandable by someone with no programming background. If relevant, also include class diagrams that highlight the classes and the objects you intend to create in your program.

As you work on your code, you may find that your original solution design needs to be revised. That is perfectly fine. Redesigning your solution as you run into roadblocks or find better approaches is part of the process. In this case, please update your solution design document to reflect any changes. The solution design you submit should be the one implemented in your code.
Code: All your source code, i.e., the Python programming files.

README File: Provide all necessary instructions that will enable an end-user to install the required files and run your project.

Analysis of Results: Write a 2-page document (2000 words or fewer) analyzing the results obtained and drawing inferences and insights about the applicability of these results on trading system development for alpha generation.

INF11114 | Digital Business Environments | Management

INF11114 | Digital Business Environments | Management

This is a formal piece of work, worth 30% of your mark for the module.
Coursework 1 comprises preparatory work for an analysis that you will fully undertake for Coursework 2.  Coursework 1 sets the focus for that work, examining your selection of an appropriate organisation to study, your assessment of potential sources of data, the nature of the analytical approaches that you intend to undertake.
You are required to produce a short (2000 word upper limit) report, addressing three inter-connected areas:
  1. The rationale for your selection of a specific organisation to study.
  2. Review of potential data sources.
  3. Critical assessment of the potential contribution of four analytical approaches
N.B. in Coursework 1 you are NOT undertaking the full analysis.  The scope of the work covers the preparatory steps – presenting the outcome of decisions that you will then put into practice for Coursework 2.  Following Coursework 1 (and feedback received) your plan for Coursework 2 may go ahead as anticipated, or else you may choose to change your focus.

Report Content Areas

Rationale for the Selection of an Organisation

The first substantial section of the report covers the rationale for yourselection of an organisationto provide the focus for your analysis.
The organisation can belong to either the public, private or third sectors, and your choice here should be substantiated.  Organisations operating in non-English speaking countries are acceptable, but all report content and supporting materials must be fully translated into English.
The extent to which the organisation currently operates ‘digitally’ must be considered:
  • The organisation might be a fully digital operation with online products and services, or elsehave a mix of digital and physical products and services. Alternatively, the current digital operations might be quite basic, but with scope for further development.
  • The organisation might have physical as well as digital presences, or customer relationships might be supported entirely online.
  • The organisation might be a long-established organisation adapting to the digital environment, or it might be a more recent pioneer or start-up in the digital economy.
Your choice of organisation should be based on a good understanding of the organisation’s current approach to ‘digital’, and possible digital opportunities ahead.  You should aim to be as clear as possible about why this organisation makes a good case study for digital business environments.

Assessment of Potential Data Sources

Your choice of organisation must be based on a clear understanding of available sources of data and information.
When you undertake your analysis (Coursework 2), you will be applying analytical tools and concepts covered in the lectures and the tutorials, but you will also need to undertake further research to collect information and data relating to that organisation’s approach to ‘digital’.

Some questions to consider in this section:

  • Does the organisation have a profile that has attracted good quality journalism or analysis that is easily accessible to you? Some digital businesses are widely reported and in some detail. What relevant materials are available?
  • Does the organisation have a ‘digital footprint’ that is easily accessed and could provide useful source material? What is the extent of the digital footprint?
  • Does the organisation operate in a sector that has undergone significant digital transformation? Are third party reports and analyses available taking a ‘sector level’ view?
If you are working in the organisation or have useful connections, then your data collection can include primary data (interviews with relevant staff etc).
The availability of information is clearly related to your choice of organisation – this section should provide a strong argument that useful data is available, including references to potential sources.

Selection of Analytical Approach

In Digital Business Environments, you are encouraged to examine and apply techniques for undertaking systematic analysis of how organisations are approaching digital platforms and forging new relationships with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders.  The module provides a four level ‘analytical stack’.  In this section you should provide a critical assessment of the relevance of one or more of these approaches for analysing the micro and macro environments:
  • Online Marketplace Analysis
  • Analysis of Channel Structures
  • Value Analysis
  • SLEPT analysis
To do this, you must also take into account the current stage of the organisation’s digital development, as well as your overall aims in conducting the analysis.  It is recommended that you link your arguments in this section to points made in preceding sections of the report.

Format of the Report

The report should contain a title page including the word count and your matriculation number (do not include your name). The main body of the report should be near to (but not over) 2000 words, excluding title page, reference list and appendices.  Appendices may be used to contain any supporting information.Reports with wordcount over the 2000 word limit will have marks capped at P1 (the lowest pass grade possible).A report of much less than 2000 words is unlikely to contain adequate content, which will reduce the marks available.
Your report must contain the following mandatory sections:
  1. Introduction
  2. Rationale for the selection of an organisation
  3. Assessment of potential data sources
  4. Selection of analytical approach
  5. Conclusion
Use the marking grid (last page) to plan the report – it shows the relative weighting of each section.
All sources consulted must be formally acknowledged through good referencing practice. The report must have referencing of an appropriate standard, and must adhere to the style and format notes below.

Submission

This assignment is due to be submitted via the Turnitin service linked within Moodle, on or before the due date. You should use the Originality Report you obtain after submission to ensure that your report contains no significant copying from any source.
General submission rules
Grades and feedback will be available within two weeks of submission.  Where health or other issues are affecting your ability to complete the assignment on time, consult the ‘Fit to Sit’ process (on ‘My Napier’), which enables you to apply for an extension or a deferral.

Style and format notes

The report will be marked anonymously.  Please do not put your name anywhere on the document, but do provide your matriculation number on the front page.

SWM5100 | Social Work: Fields of Practice | Management

Task description
Background
As a social worker, it is important to be able to view complex problems from a number of view points, including the perspective of the client. Working through the questions below will help you to apply some of the ideas from lectures and tutorials to a real-world challenge.
There are no right or wrong answers. Your responses should be grounded in what you have learned in lectures, tutorials and through your readings and own research. Thus, the answers are not necessarily given in the clip; instead the clip provides a stimulus from which you can demonstrate what you have learned over the last four weeks.

Student response

In preparing your Student Response, please ensure that you address the following:
  1. Who do you believe is responsible for addressing the long term unemployment and why? (5 marks)
  2. What evidence and /or research was presented in this clip that could contribute to a solution to assist the unemployed? How does this and other evidence assist in social work interventions generally? (5 marks)
  3. Drawing on learning in the course so far and what you understand is involved in being unemployed, what interventions do you think a social worker could put in place for a long-term unemployed client to assist them into meaningful work? (5 marks)
  4. Imagine you are a social worker providing services to the long-term unemployed. What three pieces of information would you like to know from the client before commencing work with them and why?                                                       (5 marks)

SWM5102 |Critical Social Work | Management

SWM5102 |Critical Social Work | Management

 Objectives
This assessment task relates to outcomes 1,2,and 8 for this unit:
  1. Describe and identify the specific biopsychosocial developmental needs that arise in childhood, adolescence and adulthood to inform direct social work practice with individuals and families.
  2. Explain how risk and protective factors may enhance or impede the development of resilience in childhood, adolescence and adulthood and consider how to apply this knowledge in working with individuals and families.
  3. Demonstrate appropriate and reflexive use of ‘self’ in the professional helping relationship, based on an awareness of self and others, including assessment of familial, social and cultural contexts.

By 9 April 2018 you are required to submit a 1500 word critical response to the following case study 1 of Hayley and her family (see case study 1). Discuss the difference between the life span and life course approach to human development in relation to this case. Demonstrate an awareness of your own values, ethics and prejudices and implications of these for social work practice with individuals and families.
This paper must include:
  1. State what the key issues and challenges are in this case study 1 of Hayley and her family situation and how these relate to social work practice with individuals and families using the life span approach and the life course approach to human development (Harms, 2010.) (25%)
  2. Explore your personal response to the case, and describe what you perceive to be the basis of your reactions (refer to your own life experiences, your own life stage, and how factors like your age, gender, ethnicity and so on impact your perception of this case study) (25%)
  3. How does this situation challenge your values, morals, philosophy or personal ethics and how do these relate to the Australian Association of Social Workers’ code of ethics (20%)
  4. With whom do you feel you would have most empathy in this case study and with whom you feel you may have difficulty empathising; how might you address any lack of empathy in your future direct social work practice? (20%)
  5. Essay presentation, clarity of argument and literacy are expected to be at a competent level with a minimum of at least four academic references to be cited for this assignment. (10%)
Hayley
3/25/2018Youare a social worker employed by a familySWM5102serviceS12018:thatAssignmentusesfamily1-Criticaltherapyreflectitonassistonthe lifespanfamilies who voluntarily present to resolve family issues. Zheng Shi phones you to discuss what she can do about her daughter’s current behaviour.
Hayley is 21 years old. She lives with her Mother Zheng Shi (53 years old) and her mother’s new boyfriend, Max (45 yrs.).
Zheng Shi’s new boyfriend is a psychologist who is convinced that Hayley has a serious internet addiction. He is writing an article on this issue and has identified that Hayley is spending most of her every waking moment on her phone, computer or Ipad. Hayley is not working and dropped out of her degree course by simply not attending classes and not handing in any assignments. For Max, this means that Haley’s internet use is impacting her life in negative ways and warrants the label of addiction. Max thinks that she is losing out on a job, education and any future career. He tells Hayley that she doesn’t have a boyfriend because of her constant internet use.

Zheng Shi, also a health professional, on the other hand thinks that Haley is depressed and suffers from anxiety due to a terrifying kidnapping event in her early childhood. Hayley and her father Michael (58 yrs.) who was a British military officer were accidentally caught up in an event that meant Hayley was locked and confined in a limousine by herself for several hours at the age of 5.
Zheng Shi met Michael in Hong Kong when she was 30 years old and they were happily married and living in Indonesia at the time. Hayley was very distressed by this “kidnapping” incident and had nightmares, lost weight and wet the bed most nights for several years. Zheng Shi blamed Michael for this event and their relationship began to break down. They attempted to make a new life away from Indonesia and migrated to Australia.
After ten years of living in Australia Michael moved out of the family home. Hayley loved her dad and felt completely abandoned by him. She started drinking and taking risks by staying out late and being out with people she did not really know until the early hours of the morning. Zheng Shi was very stressed by her daughter’s risky behaviour and tried her best to regulate her activities. But Hayley would climb out her window at night or not return after school. This self-destructive behaviour by Hayley went on for about 18 months.
For her final year in high school Hayley was very quiet and stayed in her room after school and started blogging and posting on a range of topics that interested her. Her mother was very relieved to have her home and safe. Hayley researched and promoted all kinds of causes and seemed to gain a sense of identity from her online status. She enrolled in an online degree course after high school and rarely left the house.
When Max moved in with Zheng Shi earlier this year, he became very concerned about the number of hours Hayley spends in her room on her devices. Zheng Shi also found out that Hayley was no longer enrolled in her course and was not interested in taking on a job or doing any tasks around the house. Hayley was moody and irritable at meal times and anytime her mother asked her to do any chores. Max highlighted that this is part of the warning signs of internet addiction.
Hayley argues that some of her friends spend even more time than her on the internet. She knows one blogger who does marathons on-line, playing various games and not even stopping to sleep. Max believes that this is anti-social. However, Hayley argues that this the way of the future and that she talks to people all around the world all of the time. She says that she also feel connected to people from various countries through her internet chats and blogs.
Zheng Shi is growing more concerned about her daughter’s behaviour and wonders how to assist her to become more self-sufficient. Zheng Shi is starting to agree with Michael that the way Hayley spends her time is unacceptable and harmful to her in the long term.
